Poetic visual zine, exploring themes of identity and belonging through narrative illustration. The illustrations show the personal, a particular place and time as well as imaginary world, feelings, perceptions and an attempt to illustrate intangible - belonging. Text is filling in with more particular details, bringing in facts and deeper context. And hopefully inviting the reader to join in into contemplating belonging. How can I use illustration to archive personal and communicate intangible? How can I show my position as an illustrator working with autoethnography, embodied drawing and shy activism?
The illustrations started as pencil and watercolour drawings. Some were drawn on location. Diverse mark making is reflecting the shift from the observational drawing of reality to a dreamy world of feelings and imagination portrayed through watercolour washes and analogue textures. Images were then scanned in and deconstructed by colour channel. The process of deconstructing and constructing back an illustration, reflects how we construct our identities and sense of belonging. Both personal and collective (Rachel Taylor, Illustration and Heritage). I chose to print zine in RISO because of the inevitable misalignment of layers adding almost a soft movement to the page, unpredictability and dream like atmosphere. I chose to create a physical object as a way to archive and document an intangible as a contrast to something lost. Giving it form and presence.
